Decompression Therapy

As you know, Low Back Pain has become one of the most significant medical and socioeconomic problems in western societies.  Low back complications that are potentially related to work are most common problem presented to health care providers.  For persons below the age of 45, low back problems are the most common cause of disability and loss of income.

Frequently prescribed treatments such as medications, bed rest, heat and cold therapy, manipulation and traditional physical therapy have had less than satisfactory results.  Despite these treatments, patients have marginal results in the management of their chronic pain.  For years the majority of chronic patients find that surgery may be the only option.  We believe this will change dramatically due to spinal decompressive traction therapy now available at Beavercreek Chiropractic Clinic.

Literature has always suggested traction therapy for these patients and stated success rates from 70 to 80 percent as long as the outer annulus was still intact.  Fortunately, the largest manufacturer in traction therapy, Chattanooga Group, has made major improvements to this modality and has re-introduced their Triton Traction with these improvements under the name of Triton DTS or Triton Decompressive Traction System.

Corrections in belting, timing of the pull pattern of the traction head and changes to the traction table raise the probability when delivering traction we are in fact causing segmental separation and the subsequent decrease in interdiscal pressures associated with decompression due to unloading and distraction. This is the mechanism that we have always searched for with previous traction systems but cannot say with certainty the results would concur.  Simply stated, the product in previous form was so cumbersome to apply and pulled so fast, that most patients did not tolerate the pull poundage necessary to create distraction. Today we are happy to say the problems with the therapy have been eliminated, and Chattanooga Group has created a decompressive traction system that acheives the greatest results without being painful to the patient!!!

Spinal Decompression Therapy is the first non-surgical approach to create decompression of the intervertebral disc with a controlled distraction force utilizing the newest technology in traction therapy.  Through a controlled traction force delivered slowly and smoothly, the patient in many cases is unaware that the treatment is happening. By delivering a specific distraction force to the spine, the spinal segments are separated causing the retraction of the disc herniation and allowing for the natural healing mechanism to be activated. Spinal Decompression Therapy can relieve pain associated with herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome and radicular pain allowing the patient to further their treatment regimen in without debilitating pain.

Before resorting to the surgical approach, it makes common sense to try this non-surgical alternative that we believe now has an achievable success rate over 70%.

As with traditional traction therapy the Indications and Contraindications would be the same:

Indications:

  • Low back pain with or without leg or arm pain
  • Patients with neurogenic deficits  (leg or arm numbness, motor loss, etc.) are considered candidates
  • Post surgical patients (laminectomy, discectomy and fusion are candidates)
  • May be undertaken when extent of surgical procedure has not compromised the vertebral articulations and/or ligamental structures.

Contraindications:

  • Primary or metastatic neoplasm in the spine
  • Vertebral fractures
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Prior lumbar fusion with fixation hardware
  • Cauda equina syndrome
  • Unstable spondyloslisthesis

Our confidence in the product changes and improvement intrigued us so much, we purchased a system and are enthusiastic about the initial results.  Our hope is to decrease the patient's symptomatology and elevate their quality of life.  Imagine being able to lift your grandchildren again or get the groceries out of the car withouth excruciating pain!!  Please give our office a call at 937-426-9265 if you would like any more information regarding our revolutionary new technology regarding decompression, or if you would like to set up an appointment.

Thank you for your time.
